Ara : An Ara court on April 24, 2018, sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment three persons and also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of  them in connection with murder of an RJD MLA’s sister.

Shambhu Yadav, advocate, said that Shail Devi, elder sister of the RJD MLA from Barhara assembly constituency Saroj Yadav, had gone to Chandi Tola to buy some medicine on April 9, 2016, from her village at Sharda Tola under Chandi police station. When she was  returning home on a three- wheeler, three miscreants who were already on the three- wheeler, teased and tried to outrage her modesty even as she disclosed that she was sister of an MLA.

When she raised an alarm, the miscreants attacked her with an iron rod and threw her on  the edge of the road and escaped. The villagers admitted her to Ara Sadar Hospital but the doctors there referred her to Patna Medical College and Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment on April 12, 2016. Later, Saroj Yadav, MLA, lodged a named FIR with Barhara police station against three persons: Santosh Singh, Sudhir Kumar and Mithlesh Kumar of Narvirpur.

On April 24, Additional and Session Judge IV, Ara, Rajesh Kumar convicted all the three named accused in the murder of Shail Devi and awarded rigorous life imprisonment to Santosh Singh, Mithlesh Kumar and Sudhir Kumar. Saroj Yadav expressed satisfaction over the punishment but said that he would move the higher court for capital punishment to the accused.
