Patna : Top seed Rafael Nadal, 32, Spain, and second seed Alexender Zverev, 21, Germany, and 6th seed Marin Cilic, 29, Croatia, entered the quarter-finals of Rogers Cup tennis tournament at Toronto, Canada, on August 10, 2018.
World No 1 in ATP rankings and winner of 17 Grand Slam titles Nadal beat winner of three Grand Slam titles Stan Wawrinka, 33, Switzerland, currently World No 195, in a tough contest 7-5, 7-6. Wawrinka fired 6 Aces in the match to just 2 by Nadal. Wawrinka committed two double faults. Nadal won three break points while Warinka won 2. Nadal’s winning percentage on both first and second serve was better than that of Wawrinka.
Zverev, the World No 3, beat World No 68 Deniil Medvedev, 22, Russia, 6-3, 6-2 in the ound of 16. Both the players served 5 Aces each in the match. But, Zverev won 3 break points.
World No Cilic, the 6th seed, beat World No 12 Diego Schwartzman, 25, Argentina, 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 16 to enter the QF. Cilic served 5 Aces in the match to just 1 by Schwartzman. Cilic won 5 break points to 2 by Schwartzman. Cilic’s winning percentage of first serve was 83 % compared to 52% of his rival.
World No 38 Karen Kachanov, 22, Russia, upset World No 9 John Isner, 33, USA, 7-6, 7-6 to enter the QF. Isner hammered 19 Aces in the match to 15 by Kachanov. Kachanov committed 5 double faults to 4 by Isner. None of the two players won any break points as both the sets were decided in tie breaks.
Nadal will play Cilic in the QF while Zverev will play Tsitsipas. Kachanov will play World No 39 Robin Haase, 31, Netherlands, in the QF while World No 5 Grigor Dimitrov will play World No 6 Kevin Anderson, 32, South Africa. Haase defeated World No 26 Denis Shapovalov, 19, Canada, 7-5, 6-2 in the Round of 16.
