Patna : Australia beat India by 34 runs in the 1st ODI at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, Australia, on January 12, 2019, riding on sensational spell of fast bowling by Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff who took six wickets between themselves. Australia have taken 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. India Vice-captain and opener Ro-hit Sharma though played an incredible innings of 133 in 129 balls hitting 10 fours and 6 sixes, his 22nd ODI century and 7th against Australia. Rohit scored century in 110 balls. Chasing a target of 289, India could score only 254/9 in 50 overs.

Wicketkeeper M S Dhoni scored 51 in 96 balls with 3 fours and 1 six. Rohit and Dhoni added 137 runs for the 4th wicket. Credit to India for taking the match to 50 overs and not getting all out as they were  4/3 after 3.5 overs with opener Shikhar Dhawan getting out for a duck, captain Virat Kohli for 3, and Ambati Rayudu also for zero. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar remained unbeaten on 29 in 23 balls with 4 fours. Dinesh Karthik made 12 and Ravindra Jadeja 8.

For Australia, Jhye Richardson took 4/26 in 10 overs while Jason Behrendorff, making his ODI debut, took 2/39 in 10 overs. Marcus Stoinis took 2/66 in 10 overs while Peter Siddle took 1/48 in 8 overs. Richardson was  named Player of the Match.

Earlier, electing to bat after winning the toss, Australia scored 288/5 in 50 overs with Peter Handscomb scoring 73 in 61 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes, Usman Khawaja 59 in 81 balls with 6 fours, Shaun Marsh 54 in 70 balls with 4 fours, and Marcus Stoinis an unbeaten 47 in 43 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes. Opener and wicketkeeper Alex Carey scored 24 with 5 fours while captain Aaon Finch was out for 6. Glen Maxwell remained 11 not out.

For India, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each while Ravindra Jadeja took one wicket. Fast bowlers Mohammad Shami and K Khaleel Ahmad leaked away too many runs without taking any wicket.
