Patna : India beat Australia by 31 runs in a thriller in the first test at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Australia, on December 10, 2018, to go 1-0 up in the four-match test series. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets each while Ishant Sharma took one wicket.

Resuming at their overnight score of 104/4, Australia were all out for 291 in their second innings chasing a target of 323 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 123 in the first innings and 71 in the second innings, was declared Player of the Match. Captain Virat Kohli said he was super proud of his bowlers. He said  the Australians fought very well in the match. Kohli said India deserved to win.

Although Australia lost the match, their lower order batsmen put up tremendous fight with spinner Nathan Lyon, who had scored an unbeaten 24 in the first innings, remained not out on 38 in 47 balls with 3 fours in second innings as well. Fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins scored 28 each while Josh Hazlewood scored 13. Josh Hazlewood added 32 runs with Lyon for the 10th wicket. Shaun Marsh was the top scorer for his team with 60 runs while captain and wicketkeeper Tim Paine scored 41 in 73 balls with 4 fours. Travis Head made 14.

Electing to bat after winnings the toss, India were all out for 250 in the first innings and 307 all out in the second innings. Australia scored 235 in their first innings and 291 in the second.
