New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canada PM Justin Trudeau on February 23, 2018, held extensive talks on key issues of counter-terrorism and extremism as well as ways to boost trade ties, after which the two sides inked six pacts including on energy cooperation

After their nearly two-hour long meeting, PM Modi while addressing a joint media event with Canadian PM Trudeau said they discussed the entire gamut of the bilateral partnership. Asserting that it is important that the two countries work together to fight terrorism, Modi said there should be no place for those who misuse religion for political goals.

PM Modi also made it clear that those who challenge India’s sovereignty and unity will not be tolerated. Modi’s remarks come amidst criticism of the Trudeau government’s soft approach towards the Khalistan issue. Stating that Justine Trudeau has visited various parts of India in last few days, Modi said the Canadian PM must have experienced the diversity of the country. On his part, Trudeau described India as a natural partner for commercial cooperation.

Welcome Prime Minister Trudeau on his official visit to India, PM Modi said although as Prime Minister this is his first India visit, however, he had visited India in 1983 with his father Pierre Trudeau, the then Prime Minister of Canada. ” We are delighted that you have come with your wife and children. My visit to Canada in 2015 was the first bilateral visit of any Indian Prime Minister in 42 years. I had visited Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa during the visit. I experienced the love and affection of the people of Canada towards India,” PM Modi said.

“India and Canada can work together in every sector: from trade and investment to energy; from science and innovation to education and skill development; and from oceans to the space. In our today’s meeting, we reviewed all aspects of our mutual relations and identified the solid measures for increasing the mutual cooperation. First of all, we agreed to strengthen our security cooperation. Terrorism and militancy are a threat for democratic and pluralistic society like India and Canada. It’s important for us to come together to face these forces,” PM Modi said.

P”rime Minister Trudeau and I have agreed to fight terrorism and militancy. Our NSAs have also met earlier. They have finalised the Framework for Cooperation on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism,” PM Modi added.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj called on the Canadian prime minister and discussed various issues of mutual interest
