Ara : Had police delayed a little bit, a married woman would have been burnt alive at village Saripur under Sandesh police station in Bhojpur district on January 21, 2019, late evening by her in-laws for not begetting a child. Police recovered the woman from pyre in an unconscious state and admitted her to Sadar Hospital, Ara, where she is being treated.

A named FIR has been lodged with Sandesh police station against the husband of the woman and her in-lawsbut no arrest has so far been made in this connection.

Bhojpur SP Aditya Kumar said that Putul Devi alias Laxmi Devi, 26, daughter of Sri Bhagwan Thakur of village Bachari under Sandesh police station, was married to Ravindra Thakur, son of Basudev Thakur of Sandesh Bazaar village under Sandesh police station, about 10 years ago. As When she could not beget a child , her in-laws started torturing her physically and mentally. Even her husband thrashed her regularly in a drunken state.

Laxmi Devi had narrated her ordeal before her parents who tried to reconcile them but her in-laws did not stop torturing her and on January 21, they thrashed her and when she fell unconscious, they brought her to the crematorium ground at village Saripur and put her on pyre with a view to burning her alive. In the meantime, someone, hearing the cry of the woman, informed police. Police immediately rushed to the spot and rescued the woman though her in-laws escaped from the scene.
