Patna : World No 9 in Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings Saina Nehwal, 28, defeated World No 6 P V Sindhu, 23,  in straight games 21-18, 21-15 in final to retain her women’s singles title at the 83rd Yonex Sunrise Senior Badminton Nationals at Guwahati, Assam, on February 16, 2019. Saina had also beaten Sindhu in the previous Senior Badminton Nationals at Nagpur, Maharashtra, in November 2017.

Gold Coast, Australia, CWG gold medallist Saina Nehwal used her powerful smashes and better strokeplay to beat Sindhu, a two-time winner, in the summit clash. The match saw capacity crowd at the TRP Indoor stadium, Guwahati. Saina had also defeated 2016 Rio Games silver medallist Sindhu at the Gold Coast CWG summit clash in 2018.

Earlier, World No 55 Sourabh Verma, 26, completed a hat-trick of titles at the Senior Badminton Nationals, lifting the men’s singles title defeating World No 106 Lakshya Sen, 17, in straight games 21-18, 21-13 in the final. Sourabh Verma from Madhya Pradesh had won the title in 2011 and 2017, showed tactical brilliance to beat Lakshya.
